Quality Keith Returns..... with an Important Update.

Sorry about the lack of updates, lately. Its been a busy six months, but a productive one. We've just attended Supanova (like you didn't know), sharing a stall with Paul Arangio from www.figuresdirect.com.au. and I have to say, we had ourselves a great time. It was bigger and better than last year, and I think we all know the best is yet to come (although how do you top Dave Gibbons and Tim Sale?). I think we will have a double stall next year, so we can actually breathe out. Anyway, here's a random series of paragraphs desperately trying to appear like a glimpse inside the smoke and mirror brain of quality Keith. A 'how I see things at the moment' kind of thing.

We're slowly building up our relationships with the larger comics community. I know better than most how the shop had been perceived under past management regimes. Believe me. I know. I'm very grateful to those customers that have stayed with us during this period, and I'm just as grateful to the many new people who have come down our well worn staircase. We've even had a few of our previous customers come back in recent weeks, and renew their membership, which gives me the kind of warm and fuzzy feeling that I usually associate with cuddling a lot dog.

I thank all the local comic creators that have let me stock their comics in our shop, I think we have a great local artist section that can only get better in time. And to those local creators that continue to dismiss us as 'a bad memory', I say this: Grow up, mofo's. ;) . Just kidding. I'm happy to stock and spread the word about your stuff, if you want to give me a chance. I understand if you don't want to, but in the long run you're only hurting yourself.

I think that the most noticible shift in the demographic has been with a larger number of females shopping here. Back when I was a wee teenager, if you saw a girl in a comic shop, she was either: a) with her bodybuilder Wolverine reading boyfriend, b) looking for a present for her bodybuilder boyfriend, or c) hopelessly lost. With the rise of manga and anime, along with more mature adult lines of graphic novels, the comic shop (not lcs, I hate those patronising retailspeak, dammit!) has gradually lost its reputation as a locker room for geeks. We get a lot of positive feedback from the ladies, which I highly value. They like us! They really like us! And, on the whole (though I fear I generalise), they have a more diverse taste than the fellas. And usually smell better.

I don't think it would surprise any recent reader of comics that the actual monthly comic book itself is becoming increasingly superceded by the rise of the 'graphic novel' in hardcover or trade paperback collections. Marvel, Dc and the rest obviously want us to buy more of the books and less of the comics, and we comply like the good programmed citizens we are. Well, not me. I buy both. In your face, large comic corperations. Our right hand wall was once covered in 'floppies' (yes, people really do call them that) the last three months. Now it is covered in trades, albums, hardcovers, collections, and other graphic novel thingies. This is not an accident. And believe me, I am constantly thinking about ways (other than stacking books spine out) to increase the display space. Ways that don't cost a robotic arm or cyborg leg.

Before this becomes an Academy Award acceptance speech, let me quickly finish. I promise to update the blog much more frequently than before, starting with a weekly list of whats coming in, hopefully this week. Check back sson. And thank you all from the bottom of my coal black heart. Quality Comics is here to stay, and we invite you to stay with us. Lets face it. We need each other.

Blistering Barnacles!! Tintin comes to Quality Comics!

Item! Fans of the world famous intrepid reporter (although now that I think about it, I hardly ever saw him file a story) should be sure to come in to the store to check out our new range of official Tintin merchandise, all obtained from Australia's only official distributor.

Sure we have the books, everyone has the books, right? But not everyone has their grubby little mitts on the figurines, hmm, now, do they? Here's a sample for your greedy little eyes:

We currently have a selection of figures, two Snowy plushes, and a range of t-shirts sizes ranging from childrens to (ahem) large-ish sized blokes. The shirts look a little bit like this (actually, they look exactly like this:

The figures are disappearing fast, so hustle your little Bianca Castafiore butts into the shop before its too late. You'll feel like yelling "Thundering Typhoons!"

Crumbs! its late, gotta go,

Quality Keith.

Quality Comics is DEAD. Long Live Quality Comics

Hello Perth, welcome to the first ever post from the first ever blog for Perth's longest existing comic store, Quality Comics!

I know some of you will be puzzled to find that we are still open, after a tumultuous time at the end of 2008. I don't want to dwell on that (I do my dwelling elsewhere) other than to say that although it looked like the store would be closing Christmas eve 2008, uhh, it didn't.

It IS under new management, though. I am your guide, call me Quality Keith (although perhaps to my face you can just call me Keith). As the new owner of Quality Comics, I hereby vow to return the greatness of years gone by to the store. I am a lifetime comic fan (Spider-Man taught me to read at the age of 5), and this is really a dream opportunity for me. The premises are old, they need a lot of attention, we have no running water and lately I've caught the whiff of perhaps a dead hobo emanating from the back passages, but its MINE, and I do solemnly swear to do everything in my power to run the best damn funny book shop in town.

Its 2009. Time to re-evaluate just what a comics shop should be at the end of the first decade of the new millenium. Are comics for kids? Are 'graphic novels' just for arrogant adults? Is cosplay just for dubious forty four year old men with a preference for lycra? Are Marvel and DC the only comics companies that put out comic books? I say thee nay to all counts.

I say, come in to the all new Quality Comics and you will find a shop that looks much like it did before. Delve a little deeper however, and you start to notice that there aren't as many actual comic books (strangely called 'floppies' by some these days) on the shelves anymore. Gasp in amazement as you realize that those selfsame shelves are now full of hardcovers, trade paperbacks, graphic novels, comic digests, and sometimes the remains of a customers lunch.

I want to have a shop that is continually evolving, not showy ways, but ways that allow us to constantly evaluate our range of titles and our level of service. If you have any suggestions or ideas, please don't hesitate to tell me. If you haven't been in for a while, please drop in and have a look at how we're doing. I really appreciate those that have stayed with us through the last 5 months when they could have easily gone elsewhere. I ask others to not judge the name of the store too harshly when thinking about what has gone before. The name may be the same, but everything else has changed, and we would be honoured if you would join us on our exciting new journey.

Thank you, goodnight farewell and adios amigos and remember to check back for news, reviews and just general shenanigans often.
